President Ali marks first year of second term with infrastructure, health and economic initiatives

President Mohamed Irfaan Ali marked the first year of his second term by commissioning a series of infrastructure projects and announcing health and economic initiatives. At the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge commissioning in October 2025, President Ali said, "Oil revenues, wisely managed, are being converted into structures like this, projects that deliver benefits to every single Guyanese."

The government reported that the expanded Aubrey Barker Road opened in April 2026, and President Ali said, "What is happening here on the Aubrey Barker Road is not an isolated project. It is a strategic project. It is not a local upgrade. It is part of a national upgrade of the road transport system." Official sources added that the Wismar‑Mackenzie Bridge is expected to open in October and that two new international‑standard stadiums have been commissioned. Municipal airports are planned for Regions Six and Nine. The Karasabai airstrip was commissioned with a cost of US$1.53 billion and a 3,000‑foot runway. The Paramakatoi airstrip in Region Eight, the Aishalton airstrip in Region Nine (commissioned in January 2026 at a cost of US$920 million), and the Anna Regina/Mainstay airstrip in Region Two (commissioned in July 2026 at a cost of US$220 million) were also commissioned. A total of 23 villages across five administrative regions participated in the Model Village Initiative.

Health officials reported that a Georgetown‑based surgeon performed robotic telesurgery on a patient in India in May, a distance of roughly 20,000 kilometres, and a further round of robotic procedures took place in June. President Ali said, "From today, our surgeon is called Freedom 60," adding that the surgeon will assist with cardiac, urology and gynaecology surgeries.

The Guyana Development Bank, according to government statements, offers zero‑interest, no‑collateral financing to small and medium‑sized businesses, with US$100 million of the national budget allocated to its operationalisation. The national budget presented in January totals US$1.558 trillion, and Georgetown has been earmarked for a US$2.8 billion Enhancement Programme.

President Ali also led five regional outreach visits, officials said.
