Forty three-bedroom bungalow homes are under construction at Onderneeming on the Essequibo Coast, Minister of Housing Collin Croal said on Friday.
Croal said the project is the first time the ministry is undertaking this type of housing construction in Essequibo and that it responds to demand for three-bedroom units. The homes have not yet been allocated, and the ministry is expected to move into the beneficiary engagement and pre-qualification phase.
Four Essequibo-based contractors are undertaking the project, with each responsible for 10 houses. The project is generating employment, and the contractors are employing an average of 100 people from Essequibo throughout the construction process.
He said the development is 15 to 20 per cent complete, with several houses progressing from foundation works to the curb-wall stage. He said the ministry is targeting completion of all 40 houses by the end of 2026, and that some beneficiaries are expected to receive their keys around Christmas.
Croal said the houses are being built at 10.5 million dollars, with a land cost of 500,000 dollars, for an overall 11 million dollars. He said the project cost is intended to provide beneficiaries with an affordable pathway to homeownership, and that the construction programme could be expanded based on demand.
