President Irfaan Ali said at a press conference held on the day the article was published that 750 victims of the MV Barima disaster are being assisted under the government’s HEART relief initiative.
Ali announced that G$122 million has already been disbursed to the victims. He said twenty families will be provided with land and turnkey homes at a total cost of $73.99 million.
Ali said broad support is being provided to affected children, and assistance is being offered to help recover documents for victims.
According to Ali, a legal team is advising victims on their rights, what they can expect in the medium and long term, and how the financing support will be structured.
The MV Barima disaster occurred on 18 July. The Mahdia dormitory fire tragedy occurred in 2023.
