The 2027 CARIFTA Games were officially launched on Wednesday, confirming that Guyana will be the first-time host of the event. It will be the first occasion in more than 50 years that the CARIFTA Games are held in Guyana.
Minister Charles Ramson Jr said the hosting forms part of a broader vision to establish the country as a consistent host of major junior athletics competitions. He added that the Games will be the first CARIFTA Games Guyana hosts and it will not be the last.
Ramson linked the opportunity to significant investments made in athletics over the past several years, including sporting facilities, the Sports Academy, ELITE and stipend programmes, athlete support and increased investment in national and international competition. He said it is important that Guyana host the CARIFTA Games again and again to continue feeding the talent development process pool.
Minister of Education Sonia Parag highlighted the connection among school‑level competition, national championships and CARIFTA. She noted that the National Secondary School Championships are scheduled for 3 to 5 March 2027 and that the ministry is aligning the championships with the Easter CARIFTA Games.
CARIFTA 2027 is expected to bring hundreds of athletes, coaches and officials from across the region.
