The MV Canawaima ferry will resume operations across the Corentyne River on Friday, 28 August 2026, after the ban was lifted.
The ban on the ferry was lifted by the Maritime Authority of Suriname following successful technical inspections of the vessel.
The Guyana government said the service between Guyana and Suriname will continue according to its regular schedule and that the top priority on 28 August 2026 will be transporting stranded passengers.
The Guyana government added that its representatives worked tirelessly over the past several days with Surinamese counterparts to ensure safety and structural compliance.
The Guyana government said the MV Canawaima will eventually be taken into drydock after a replacement vessel is found and that Guyana and Suriname will continue discussions for the subsequent drydocking of the MV Canawaima and a replacement vessel.
