The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has instructed vendors and owners of containers, derelict vehicles and unauthorised structures along a section of Thomas Street, Georgetown, to remove them immediately to facilitate planned road works. Public notices were issued in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and the Mayor and City Council.
Thomas Street Avenue, between Lamaha and Church streets, is being upgraded under the President’s Healthy Streets Initiative, the ministry said. The ministry said the project is intended to create a cleaner, safer, more accessible and healthier street environment in Georgetown.
The directive applies to vending caravans, containers, derelict vehicles and unauthorised structures that occupy the road reserve and other public spaces within the project area, the ministry said. Owners and occupants were asked to make arrangements for their immediate removal to allow the works to continue. The ministry warned that enforcement action could be taken if affected persons failed to comply and called for their cooperation.
Specific notice was given to owners of several containers situated along Thomas Street next to the western fence of the Georgetown Public Hospital, the authorities said. The authorities said those containers were obstructing planned works and preventing the timely progress of infrastructure activities. One of the notices said: “The containers are obstructing planned works and impeding the timely progress of infrastructure activities in the area.”
The notices stated that containers near the hospital could be removed by government agencies and the municipality, and that other obstructions along the project corridor could be cleared in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations. The second notice stated: “The continued presence of these obstructions will impede construction activities and delay the timely execution of the project.”
Neither notice specified a deadline for the removal of the structures, and neither indicated where vendors operating in the affected area would be relocated.
