Construction of modular housing will resume on 15 September, the Ministry of Housing said.
The Ministry of Housing is developing an online platform that will allow house‑lot beneficiaries to select prefabricated‑house contractors, compare designs and prices and seek mortgage financing from participating banks. The government affirmed its commitment to build 40,000 houses over five years. More than 200 submissions were received for the modular‑housing invitation, and the ministry recorded 268 responses to the invitation.
Two contracts have been signed to date; one contract covers houses of approximately 600 square feet. Design work has been completed for a 20‑acre development, and the ministry is piloting standardised foundations at Leonora and Meten‑Meer‑Zorg.
Croal said he accompanied President Irfaan Ali on a May 2024 tour of two‑bedroom prefabricated houses at Leonora. He noted that the houses featured fire‑resistant insulation and that the first house was constructed in seven days.
The Ministry of Housing alleged that Modular Builds collected about G$145 million from four clients without intending to complete the work, and that four clients were alleged to have paid the G$145 million.
